Mr. Flex

Mr. Flex.

My brother started that nickname about 5 years ago.  If I remember all this right, Carly was around 14 and was visiting my parents and my brother's family for an away from home adventure.  She had gone down to the creek behind my parent's home with Uncle Matthew when Brian, age 15, ventured upon them.  He stood there talking for quite some time with his arms folded, his hands strategically balled and placed behind his biceps to push them out to make himself more manly, more studly-       to impress Carly.

A Carly very unaware of her curves, her femininity, her anything that would make a boy stand there talking to a guy in his ward he usually never talked to, trying to flex his muscles for an unnatural period of time...

After Mr. Flex had exhausted his avenues for conversation with Matthew, he sauntered off.  Matthew turned to Carly and asked if she'd noticed him flexing because it was all for her!   She was mortified and sure he was mistaken.  She hadn't noticed a thing  and was only wishing he'd leave so she could have her uncle's attention back...

Over the years my dad and my brother and just about everyone else in the family have enjoyed teasing Carly about Mr. Flex.  Uncle Matthew would mention... "Mr. Flex was in my Sunday School class today.  He was wondering if my niece would be visiting anytime soon.."  My dad would cut out articles from the paper and send them to Carly as Mr. Flex became quite the football star leading his team to a very victorious season.

Carly was planning to go to SUU and lots of teasing began when we found out Mr. Flex got a full ride football scholarship... "Maybe you'll bump into each other on campus and you can ask him to flex for you" heh heh heh...   She was used to it by this time and would roll her eyes and shake her head and laugh it off.

Mr. Flex decided to defer his scholarship to serve a mission.  He started doing his paperwork and went to the doctor to find out why he couldn't shake this bad cold he'd had for a few weeks.  That bad cold turned out to be cancer.  Instead of serving a mission, he has been fighting cancer for the last 2 years- fighting hard.  He and his mom have been in so many hospitals, trying so many different treatments.

When I heard Tuesday morning that he had died, I was surprised by the overwhelming grief I felt for this boy whom I have never met.  I cried and my heart ached and I just feel so sad and empty.  I think I kept half expecting a miracle turnaround.  He was a prime candidate: faithful family, preparing to serve a mission, his ward praying for him, strangers (like me) praying for him.  In every story I've ever heard about him, he is strong and vibrant and full of life.  It just feels so wrong and pointless.  5 years ago he was standing on the creek bank, flexing, flirting, unaware.  Tonight he is lying in a morgue....  3 years ago:  On top of the world- leading his team to victory every game.  Tonight- gone.

The last 2 years while my child started college, struggled through her new beginning, fell in love, got married and decided to become a mother,  somebody else's child fought for his life with chemotherapy and blood transfusions and pain and nausea and misery and faded away.

My faith tells me that his spirit is somewhere beautiful and maybe this cancer fight was more important a test than a life full of choices, maybe it refined him and made of him a stripling warrior in the most important ways.  However my heart hasn't caught up with my faith yet and all I can do is cry for the boy who's gone and the mother who is not.

A woman I have never met lost her baby this week, her youngest of seven I think.  My heart hurts for her and so I held mine a little tighter tonight than usual when I said good night.  He looked confused as he kissed my cheek and wiped away the tears that were falling.  He didn't ask why.. He just smiled sweetly at me and wiped the tears and said "i love you too" as if he just understood it was my love for him dripping down my cheeks.

I'm glad I didn't yell at him the other day when he broke the 4 brand new glass votive holders as he dropped the bag on the way out of the store.  Votive holders just don't matter very much.  I want to remember that.

There are so many sad stories we hear on the news and from friends.  If we truly felt them all- we'd be a mess, nonfunctioning puddles of sadness all the time.  But sometimes, a story connects, just hits our heart just so and we feel it all.  I think that's why I can't let go of my sadness.  He's the same age as Carly, in the same stage of life- Beginning adulthood, stepping off into his own adventure and he was cut down before he could begin and my heart cries out "what if this was your child??  It could be your child..."

Maybe my sadness is really fear.

"Don't Mock My Faith!"

We were invited to go down to Southern Utah the Last week of August to go boating with Mark's boss.
Mark got a paid day off which was Awesome
Plus...
My parents, 2 of my brothers
AND
Carly and Adam live down that way
so we were so excited.

We drove down Thursday night, picked up Carly and Adam at SUU and drove on to my parents house.  We woke up Friday morning to pancakes on the griddle....
Grandma C's signature breakfast for guests-
and looked out the window to find
Black clouds and pouring rain.

Mark called up his boss and said "I guess boating is off" and Lonnie said "Oh heck no... this is just a little storm cell. Let's go!"

I had some serious doubts as the Thunder rumbled over head but we climbed into the van and drove over to Lonnie's house where he was hooking up the boat.  Jake and Mason decided to drive over with him and I just shook my head and we all just looked at each other like we didn't know WHY we were driving to the lake....

We pulled up to the dock.  Mark jumped out to help Lonnie get the boat in the water.  Carly, Adam, Rachel, Samantha and I sat in the van watching the rain pour and it was COLD outside.

As we sat there, Samantha said "I think it's stopping. Yeah.  I think it's going to be fine!"
We looked at her like she was crazy.  Somebody laughed.  Somebody said "look out the window... I don't think so" and she replied with determination in her voice
"Don't mock my faith!"
Just about that time, Mark motioned for us to come down to the boat.
I was dreading going out.  The rain had slowed, due no doubt to Samantha's belief, but it was still falling and it was chilly sitting there in our swimsuits.

We put the canopy up on the boat and putted around the lake a bit and Lonnie grinned at us and said "You just watch. This is the best kind of day.  We've got the lake to ourselves! It's gonna clear up!" He got out the tube and a few jumped in and the rain slowed even more til it was just sprinkling.
They skies were very gray and overcast.  I wish I had taken my camera out but I had left it in the car because of the rain.  I didn't think there would be anything to take pictures of.  I finally got it later when we docked for lunch.

Anyway...
Rachel, Adam, Carly and Jake decided to try out the tube first and when they jumped in the lake they said the water was SO warm.  And it was.  It felt like bath water.  It was so nice.
The Day just got better and better from then on.  It wasn't immediate.  The rain just slowed and slowed until it finally stopped.  The skies just cleared and cleared little by little until the sun shone down on us but the water was clear and beautiful and warm.

There were red vines and Nutter butters and Oreos!

Lonnie's wife drove over and met us at the dock with lunch from Firehouse subs!
Yum.

The newlyweds were just as happily in love as you might imagine...

There were some tunes

And there was the Tube!

Getting on the tube

was sometimes harder than you might think....

And staying on the tube...

Was

Even

Harder!

Especially

for the poor sap who gets stuck

kneeling in the back position

which was usually Jake!
He was such a good sport about taking that spot.  You can't see it very well in these pictures but there are 3 spots to sit in the front and then a spot behind the center seat for a 4th person who kneels there and holds on.

Nobody wanted that spot and Jake would always take it.  His poor arms were like spaghetti noodles at the end of the day from holding on so tight.

we also got to try kneeboarding

Sammy did it!

Mason dit it!

Mark tried to do it

and got up on his knees...

which was farther than I got.  I tried and couldn't even get up to my knees.....
embarrassing....

Jake did it!

Carly did it!

She was a total natural at it.

Rachel did it!

Jake tried really hard to wakeboard but never could quite get up.  We think it was because we did it at the end and he was so worn out from the riding on the back of the tube and kneeboarding.  He just couldn't keep his balance.

Lonnie was right!
It was a great day on the lake.
We had it to ourselves until the late afternoon when 2 or 3 other boats joined us.  We stopped a lot and jumped in the warm water and swam in our life jackets and that was a lot of fun too. We had a great time being together and seeing Carly and Adam.  We finally left the lake about 5 o'clock and went to my parent's house to get cleaned up a little and then Lonnie had dinner for us at his house a block away.

He is a generous boss and really made the day a great one for our family.
I appreciated the opportunity to be in a beautiful place with the people I love best.
It's one of those days you'll never forget and we had to go through cloudy skies and cold rain to get it.  If it had been up to most of us I think we would have thrown in the towel-
Our perfect day was created
because of Lonnie's optimism that put us on the road-
and Samantha's belief that something better was coming.

hmmmm.....I think there's a life lesson in there somewhere......

Catching up: June Birthdays

Rachel turned 17 in June...
Again....
birthday celebrations were overshadowed by wedding and school.
It seems like there were 10,000 things going on that week and we tried to fit in some celebrating and

why we ended up with 2 lone pictures is a mystery...
I am losing my bday celebration touch.

She had more than that little cupcake--
We actually made a strawberry bottom cheesecake but it's hard to stick candles in that.
she is always my nontraditional bday cake girl.
We've made rice crispy treat sushi with gummy worms...
fruit bouquets...
and strawberry pie
All hard to stick a candle in.
She's been busy since turning 17~

She had a couple weeks off in between track season ending and cross country season starting but starting in June she would leave the house at 7ish to go running, get home between 10:30 and 11:00 with enough time to shower and get ready and hopefully get something to eat before heading to work from 12-4 at Response (a telemarketing place)  It wasn't her favorite job but it was the same time every day and not too long of a shift and gave her mornings off for cross country and evenings off for YW, family stuff and hanging out with friends. The first month she pretty much hated it.  Carly worked there too until she got marrried and so they drove over together during June but after she got the hang of it, it wasn't so bad.  It will never be her favorite job but she'd do it again she said.  She quit when school started because it is just too hard to work and train.

Her hard work in cross country has paid off.  She is better than ever this season.  I think staying in shape for track helped and she learned some other techniques for shorter distance that have helped her build up speed. She's been placing in the top 5 at most of her races.  She is the 2nd fastest girl on her team.  She is currently ranked 16th in the state on a website that tracks all high school cross country runners according to race times.  There is a University xCountry coach talking to her and trying to get her to join his team for next year-  but it's not a school she had on her "I wanna go there" list but maybe that will change.

She is crazy busy and its hard to find time to even say hi to her sometimes.  We're all way too busy over here!

Carly got the best birthday celebration of the season and it was her wedding causing everyone else's birthdays to be lackluster....
Hmmm.... Something seems a little weird here....
I guess we were all feeling sentimental and wanted to send her off with a big Happy Birthday Bang.  She turned 19 in June and wanted a "Little kid birthday party" since it was her last kid birthday.
She chose a dragon birthday cake to reminisce about her 5th and 6th grade "dragon phase".
We're all pretty grateful she came out of that one unscathed-
Not that there's anything wrong with a dragon phase but you know...
I have just seen too many adults who never leave it and walk around the mall with giant pewter dragon necklaces and when I see them- I just thank my lucky stars, that's all...

She really got into the cake and helped me shop for the candy accessories and besides the gold covered chocolate coins, we had purchased a bag of those Hershey Treasure mini chocolate bars and chocolate w/ toffee and Chocolate with almonds that are wrapped in Gold and Silver foil wrappers but...
in between the purchasing and the actual dragon cake I had a few of those "I NEED CHOCOLATE BECAUSE I HAVE A TEST TOMORROW AND MY KID IS GETTING MARRIED WAY EARLIER THAN I EXPECTED" moments...
You've had those right?
and pilfering your daughter's birthday chocolate is totally acceptable right?

She wanted party hats and party blowers and all the trimmings

So- That's what she got

It was actually pretty fun-

She wanted the quintessential  kid party party game....

"Pin the tail on the donkey"

They didn't' have it at the dollar store-
but they did have pin the skull on the pirate ship

so we played that instead

A good Time

was had

by all!
