on being resourceful....

10/25  Ward Halloween party

Crazy week-
Class until 2.
A meeting after class for a group project.
Get home, help Mark make chili for cook-off.
Braid hair for Samantha and Gisselle and get them to curtain call for play performance by 6.
Lesson plan to finish up & turn in by 6pm.
Ward party at 6:30
No time for costume finishing for Mason-

He dug in the Halloween box and got out Carly's zombie costume from her 12th grade senior spirit day theme day minus the green socks and all the red blood... that had washed out.  He just had the shirt and the shorts. No time for embellishments.

You can call it desperate or resourceful-
Your call...
But
When we got to the church I had a idea to make him more zombi-ish--
we went into all the classrooms and wiped our hands in all the chalkboard trays and patted it all over his face.

Think what you will but HE thought I was brilliant-
 and that's all that matters.

Catching up... May birthdays

Mason turned 10 in May.
He still loves making bday cakes together.
This year he wanted a ninja cake.

This doesn't look as fabulous as it did in Family Fun but...

he was happy
so
I was happy...

He's really into BYU right now so he was happy to get a new BYU tshirt so he can be just like DAD during Football Season, wearing his shirt on Game Day

My kids are easily pleased.
Their own package of Goldfish crackers is a dream come true!

A new Football from Grandma and papa

Treats form his brothers and sisters

Samantha & Jacob splurged and got him a lego pack
I am always surprised and pleased when they spend their hard earned money on each other.
They don't get an allowance so they don't have oodles and oodles of their own money on hand all the time.
When they are generous and thoughtful with one another it makes me proud.

Samantha turned 12 in May as well.
We have terrible pictures- not a good one in the bunch!
I put Jacob in charge of picture taking and made
the discovery that he is an AWFUL picture taker so Poor Samantha will always wonder what her 12th birthday was really like....

It was really her turn for a bday party this year... Mason too
but Carly's wedding and school overshadowed and I just couldn't make it happen.
Samantha also broke tradition this year with her cake...

When her big sisters turned 12 we made a "beehive" cake, something to signify her move into the Young Women's program but she wanted nothing to do with my beehive cake ideas..
It was another ice cream and oreo frozen cake for her this year.

I have 2 springform pans, a big one and a little one so they get their VERY OWN ice cream cake made in the small one and the rest of the family shares the big one.

Happy Birthday to my 2 littlest Boca's who are getting bigger and bigger and are so patient with the going's on in 2013 that overshadowed your birthdays.
Thanks for understanding!
I will make it up to you someday
in a BIG way!
Just wait....

Raingutter Regatta

I don't even know when this was....
That's how bad my "keeping up" skills are but I know I was there
and I know he was adorable.
oh wait... I just remembered a conversation I had with my friend Amy which makes me think it was before school was out????
Maybe april or May 2013????

We've never been to one of these before.  I think when Jake was in cub scouts, we were out of town when they held the raingutter regatta.
It's a lot less competitive than the pinewood derby.
I'm not anti-pinewood derby, those are fun too.  (except when there's cheating... )

Mark and Mason worked on the boat together.

That's the whole point of the raingutter regatta and the pinewood derby isn't it?
To give boys and their dads a project to undertake together.

I'm glad Mark took advantage of the opportunity.

If he hadn't--
 we wouldn't have this smile.
In my current state of busyness I am trying to remember that there is
not much better than that in this world.

Too Cool For School

First day of School 2012
it's not that I was too busy to post or anything last year... I was just waiting, on purpose, so I could do this awesome comparison post...
"Then and now"
Samantha Grace 6th grade

Mason 4th Grade

Jake 8th grade

and....

trying on

cool

Don't know what happened to Rachel's 11th grade First day of School...

First day of School 2013

But here she is as a Senior!
My most driven, most goal-oriented, most serious child.

 Rachel 12th grade
the hardest working student I know.  She always says People think I'm smart but I'm not smart, I just work really, really hard!
I tell her " THAT's WHAT SMART IS!!!!"

Most of my kids are exactly 2 years apart... Because there is an uncharacteristic 3 yr gap between these 2 they haven't been in the same school for 6 years since she was in 6th and he in 3rd in elementary school.  With Jr. high and high school being 3 yrs each, she leaves the year he enters.  They are the closest friends and wish so much that could be different.

 Here's Jacob 9th grade
40 lbs heavier and 4 inches taller than the last first day of school 2012...
The glasses are new ones but essentially, the same look...
He likes his Aviators.

The hair has changed from the unicorn horn to the wave and he is still a great around the house helper and my happiest all around kid. He always makes me smile.
Lately it's been his "welcome to Nam" oneliners

This year he and Samantha will be walking together as 7th and 9th graders

 Mason 5th grade
My lone elementary school attendee
Can't believe he's in 5th grade AND doing his hair!!!!!

Can't believe I only have one left at Geneva.
He is my cuddlebug and my charmer

Funny...
She was wearing blue pants on the first day 2012 too!

 Samantha Grace 7th grade
She is my thinker ahead
my best helper
and
my planner

She went to school a day earlier than everyone else for 7th grade day.

She has grown a few inches since last year too in height and hair length!
She is excited about 7th grade and a little apprehensive too.  Jake was so sweet to take her to OJH and walk her around to help her find all of her classes and help her practice her locker the week before school started.  That helped alleviate her anxiety.

Rachel really wanted to walk her to class on the first day.
She's lucky to have an older brother and sister to show her the ropes.
Jake has promised to watch out for her and take care of any "problems"
such a boy!

Here's to
newness
anxiety
excitement
pencils
binders
new faces
old faces
rulers
books
and
whiteout!

How you know you're not spending enough time with your cheese balls and why you should do it NOW!!!!

School started this week and we got back on our schedule of early morning scripture reading to accommodate everyone's comings and goings.  I arranged to have it start 10 minutes earlier than last year so I could squeeze in some exercise time.

I was so proud of myself as I left my house all ready to go at 6:15 on Tuesday morning only to find the universe was conspiring against me and the gym was closed for the first week of it's 2 week annual deep clean closing.. Drat. I forgot.  (Shows you how long it has been since I went to the gym)

I was, however, UNDETERRED! Mason had decided to go play basketball at the gym while I was on the elliptical so he was with me and I asked him if he'd like to go walk around the hospital mile path with me.  He did.  He had his soccer ball with him and I listened to my ipod while he dribbled and ran and kicked within my field of vision and we got a mile in.  (He probably got 2 miles to my one)

Wednesday morning we started out again, this time determined to get in 2 miles since we wouldn't be wasting time driving to a closed gym.  He stayed right with me and i never turned my ipod on and we had a great time talking and walking.

I was feeling pretty good about spending time with my little munchkin but it obviously wasn't enough because that night he said "mom... are there any extra jobs I could do to earn special time with you?  we could play soccer or something"

Is your heart melting right now??? Mine was. Melting and a little pinched with guilt for being so darn busy.  I said "no job necessary! Lets go play soccer instead of walking tomorrow morning."

His answering grin was a sight to behold.

We had a great time.  He had me play goalie so he could practice his kicks.  I was dismal.  I am just not able to throw my whole body into the save.  I'm a little scared of twisting, breaking or pulling something but still.. I did try.  Then he practiced goalie and I tried kicking.  I did much better at offense and even scored a couple points.  It was so fun and my heart was pumping and my boy was smiling and it was a good morning.

After school he walked in the door in tears, his soccer ball in his hands with a gaping hole.  "What happened??"

He had thrown his ball to his friend as they walked home.  His friend dropped it into the street and a big truck ran over it.

I'm so glad I didn't put off the playin!.  I know he will get a new ball fairly soon as he eats, drinks and breathes soccer,  but saying yes! today made me happy and him happy and that little pinch of guilt that regularly squeezes my heart since I started school lessened just  a tiny bit.  I hope he keeps telling me what he needs and I hope keep listening.

Notes from my boy

Valentines Day 2013

I wish I could read what was on the hearts! I waited too long to record this-

One morning before school we had an argument. He is the sweetest thing 99.8% of the time; but that other 0.02% is a doozy.  When he is naughty.... watch out!  He was being very disrespectful and made me very upset.  After school, I found this beside my bed.  We were back to the 99.8%.
I was grateful.

Father Mason: Spanish Explorer & Strong John

At some point in the 2012-2013 school year......

Mason had some fun dressing up.....
And when he does it, he likes to go all out.

The 4th grade curriculum studies Utah history.  They learn songs about the Native American Tribes, the different counties in Utah, the Explorers and Mountain Men who first explored our lands here in Utah and the Pioneers who first settled it.
Then in the spring, they have a concert for parents and the rest of the school to show what they know.

Mason's teacher chose 2 students to be the Spanish explorers, Father Dominguez and Father Escalante for one of the songs.  Mason took it very seriously.

He came home so excited and telling me all about it.  He insisted he needed a costume. I wasn't sure what to do for a Father Dominguez costume and was surprised his teacher hadn't sent a note home explaining what he needed to do. It sure was easy to handle since I know her so well! She had been Rachel's and Samantha's 4th grade teacher as well. I called her up and she was as surprised as I was.  She explained that she had swords and a helmet for them and a map.  They were just supposed to kind of wander around the stage as the rest of the 4th graders sang, looking at their map and "discussing" where to travel, etc.  She had never told them they needed more than this but Mason decided HE needed more than this....

We talked about it and decided we would go with dark clothing and so he found some gloves and a dk brown shirt and black pants.  He felt pretty good about this but felt like he needed just a little bit more...

We decided a cross would be just the thing for Father Dominguez-
so we went out into the yard and found some suitable twigs that were straight and not too thin and not too thick.  We cut them to a good length and lashed them together with some twine.  He was SSOOOO thrilled with the result. The day of the performance, he came into my classroom so upset as he had forgot his cross... I probably shouldn't have... you know how we are supposed to let them reap the consequences of irresponsibility and all that..... but I did it... I ran home and got his necklace.
And I haven't regretted it for a moment.
Responsibility is important but sometimes it's just as important to be rescued.

Also at some point in 2012-2013---
His class had a "Character lunch".
They had spent several weeks writing a "Tall Tale" adventure story.  They were having lunch in their classroom together and were invited to dress up as their main character and take turns reading excerpts from their stories.
Mason's story was called "Strong John"
Strong John has a mustache and- if you haven't guessed it- super strength!
His eyes are especially strong.  If he stares at something very hard for more than 5 seconds then that thing turns to dust.  If he is angry while he's doing that, the thing just blows up!

His father was the strongest man in town. This was a magic town and in it lived an evil fairy. Someone had a magical rock and threw it at the fairy to make the fairy good and when the rock was thrown, some of the dust fell from the magic rock onto the baby and into his eyes and that's how he became Strong John.

Mason wanted to dress up of course.  He had very specific ideas about the way he wanted his hair combed and then there was the mustache...
I wasn't sure how to do that.  I remembered some dark brown felt in my fabric box and cut out a suitable shape.  Then there was the how to get it to stick question.
I remembered when my girls were babies, hearing that people stuck bows on their babies heads with karo syrup.  I had never tried it because with their 1/4 Mexican blood, they were born with lots of dark hair that I could clip barrettes into.
We smeared some karo syrup onto the back of the mustache and stuck it on his upper lip and it held! Strong John was able to make an appearance during 4th grade lunch.

I love that my kids like to get into their activities and aren't afraid to dress up and have fun.
I was so much more self conscience at their age and LOVE the freedom they feel to be themselves and have fun.

I do not think it means what you think it means.....

I have been talking about going back to college for a few months.  I thought that all my children understood what was going on.  Sometimes though.... something that seems so easy to comprehend to us is causing a mass of confusion and struggle in our sweet little kids.

A little over a week ago, Mason approached me in a very "I'm so sure about this voice" and said to me with a confident look on his face   "Jacob and Samantha said your'e going to college in a few weeks but I told them that wasn't true.  It's not. Right!!!!!!!!???!!!"

I said "Oh it IS true.  I thought you understood that.  yes... I'm going to college as soon as your school starts."  He said  "OH" and that was that.

I didn't think another thing about it.  I was just a little surprised that he didn't realize I was going back to school after all the discussion in our house, me going to orientation, etc.

About a week later, Mason came back to me in a worried voice and said "Mom, when you go to college, will you come home on Sundays?"

My heart just broke.  He has had to worry for over a week that I was leaving him behind to go to college.  sad!

I hugged him and told him that nothing was more important than him and I would never leave him and that my going to college was very different than Carly's going to college.  I explained that  some of my classes I just do on the computer and one I go to the classroom but it's right by Walmart and I'll be home a little after they get home from school 2 days a week.

He was very relieved.  I was too.   I told him that being a mom was more important than anything else and that was one of the reasons I was choosing to be a teacher-  it means that even though I need to work to help our family, I will have more time with them than with lots of other jobs.  He liked that idea.  Me too.

Wilderness Survival 101

Uncle Will is new to our family.  He married my sister in December and brought 3 amazing, kind, fun, intelligent teenage boy cousins into our lives.  If you haven't guessed, He is pretty much all those things too.  My sister, who is pretty amazing herself, deserves such a guy!

We loved spending a week at my parent's cabins with Maury, Will and the boys.  It was fun to get to know them better.  Jacob was in heaven having all these older boy cousins to hang out with.

Will was in the Air Force for 10 years and knows a thing or two about wilderness survival.  He was showing off his skills a bit to all the boys and Mason is the only one who decided to try it out.  I couldn't believe it-   yet I could.  Mason can be extremely fearful and extremely courageous.  He seems to be a boy of extremes and once he decides to do something... watch out.

Eating Grasshoppers 101

He had now eaten worms, grasshoppers, ants and moths.
yum.
He's ready for his mission I think!

Faith in God: Learning & Living the Gospel #5

WHat do you think about prayer?

First I feel kind of reverent when I start out praying and afterwards I feel peace and stuff.

How do you think prayer protects us?

Because prayer can give you blessings and stuff and Heavenly Father can- like if you're riding a bike on a trail on a mountain and it's really thin and you don't want to fall off so you pray so you will be safe and you won't fall and he can help you by not falling off.

any other examples?

When you can't find something you pray that you will find it and then maybe you will find it like one time me, my sister and my brother were in big trouble and if we didnt' find batteries to a darth vader helmet we would have been in big trouble for a long long time til we find it.  So we prayed and we found it.

How does prayer help you stay close to your Heavenly Father and Savior, Jesus Christ?

Cuz you're talking to him, you might be asking him questions so you'll be close because you're talking to him.

9 Nine 9 Nine 9 Nine

Mason is 9!

My baby is 9!
How did that happen.  I am still in shock.

As of May 13th, 2012
My soccer loving.....

.....Berenstein bear reading....

cute-as-a-button....

Sea-monkey herding, no longer petless (thanks grandma Donna)...

Pizza loving boy is 9!!!!

He wanted an ice cream cake but also wanted an alien cake....
I think ice cream cakes are pretty hard to decorate so we compromised...
We made a alien cake and a mini ice cream cake just for him.
The best of both worlds.

I sure love him!
He is excited to move on to the Bear den in Cub Scouts and be a 3rd grade graduate and it's hard for me to remember he's really this old.

I know that's the danger with the babies of the family
and it is a real danger.

It's hard to let them grow up.
