Chore Time Meets Reality TV: The Big Cheese takes over

We have had a job chart for a long time.  The kids names are in the middle of the chore chart and there is velcro on each side of their name.  There are 5  4 room jobs (sweep/mop, family room, front room, bathrooms) and 5  4 dish jobs (wash dishes, put away dishes, set table, clear table) that rotate weekly from child to child.  When Carly was home we also had walls, etc (that person washed walls, helped with laundry, did any extra job I needed done that week) and kitchen helper (helped me cook dinner) that rotated.    It worked pretty well but there were problems; the kids didn't often do their jobs on their own.  I always seemed to have to get everyone going and check up and there were many, many times that I was saying "hey, you didn't wash the table off or you didn't' sweep under the table" etc.  It worked better and they were more self motivated about them when we were consistent about our chore charts where they checked off their "to do" lists of responsibilities and earned an allowance.  I have not been as consistent with making that work in the last few months.

Lately, it has been a huge problem with me feeling frustrated about the lack of self motivation on the kid's part and having to micromanage chore time every night.  I recognize that probably means that I wasn't consistent enough and/or didn't have strong enough consequences to rectify that problem but I was so overwhelmed with school I didn't' have the energy to figure out a solution.

Saturdays were the worst.  The room chores were supposed to be something the kids kind of checked up on during the week and kept looking reasonable but on Saturday morning, they were supposed to do a deep clean of the room.

Mason was the worst... Sometimes it would take him until 3 or 4 pm to finish cleaning his bedroom and do his room job.

Sometimes the kids would get into silly fights over who could use the broom and mop first and scream at each other because "you're walking on my wet floor!!!!"   and "Well, I HAVE To because I NEED to get MY job done!!!!"   It was a very I centered approach to chore time and it had good points and it had bad points.

I have been asking Mark for more help around the house lately.  He has been very supportive about me going to school in many ways but I wasn't feeling it in the "helping around the house" way.  He came through in a BIG WAY with a new system for chore time that I thought was CRAZY at first but now believe to be Inspired, Amazing, Beautiful, Wonderful and BRILLIANT!!!

I think one of the reasons Mark hasn't helped as much around the house is because I tend to want him to do things my way and not allow him to do things his way....

When he started this I wanted to object but I, thankfully, kept my mouth shut and let him try it out.

It all started last Sunday.  It was stake conference so he came home from church when we did and wasn't gone all afternoon for meetings.  The house was pretty messy because it had been stake conference the night before and Friday night had been the ward Christmas party and I had been at a study group for several hours on saturday afternoon and he had worked on saturday so things had been less supervised....  We dont' usually do a full-on clean the house on Sunday as it's  the Sabbath and we try to honor that and keep it as God has asked us to but that day was just bad.

The kids wanted to come home and make a lunch after church and he said, "whoa... this house is a wreck! We are going to clean it up first before anyone eats and Mom is not going to do it... Go sit down mom."  He told them he was going to choose a team leader and that person would be in charge of getting all the work done.  The team leader could work as much or as little as they wanted and delegate as much as they wanted.  The other kids would be their team and he would only be dealing with the team leader.  He asked each kid if they wanted to be the leader.  Samantha and Rachel said No and Mason and Jacob said Yes.  Mark then said, "To be a good leader, you have to be a good follower so I will put Samantha in charge." That surprised them.

He took the team leader, Samantha, to the kitchen, family room, front room and told her what he wanted done.  He asked the team leader how much time she thought it would take and then said, "Okay, set the timer, get your team and get it done".

When any kid complained to Mark or I, Mark directed them back to the team leader.  They had to work it out.  When the timer beeped, Mark checked back in and asked if they needed a time extension.  They did.  He told the team leader to choose the time wisely because it was the only extension they were going to get and when the time was up she would be responsible for any work left undone.  The timer was set again and they finished it up.

After the timer beeped. Mark checked the rooms.  There were a few things left and Samantha had to do them all by herself.  After she was done, he gathered all the kids in the family room for an "Evaluation".  Samantha, as team leader, was asked to rate her team members on a scale of 1-10 and give an explanation.  Then Mark asked her if any of her team members needed a consequence for not helping the team and he allowed her to set the consequence as she had had to take his consequence of cleaning up everything that was not finished.  Mason had been belligerent and unhelpful and so she had told him to just go to his room and she had to complete his part of the job.  Mark warned her the consequence had to fit the crime and we agreed that he would not get our Sunday night dessert, ice cream and not get to open the present with his name on it from the 12 days of christmas his Auntie had sent our family.  He had so been looking forward to his day so that was a big blow.

The kids said "this is just like 'The Next Great Baker' " which is a reality cooking show that they have been watching lately.  On the show, sometimes they have to work as teams with one member acting as team leader.  The team leader is generally judged a bit more harshly on the outcome if it is bad, because they were in charge.

The team members then were able to rate the team leader on what kind of leader they were and we discussed strengths and weaknesses and how we can be better leaders.

We have done this every night this week after dinner with dish jobs and a general clean up of the downstairs.

Saturday came and Mark and I talked about whether or not we wanted to do this for Saturday room jobs and I was very enthusiastic about trying it.   I would be in charge since he was working and I hadn't  led it  before.  It has been Mark's baby.  He's so good at the evaluation part and not giving in to micromanaging like I do.  I did pretty good and we pulled it off.  I did make a few mistakes about getting involved when I should have referred the issue to the team leader but I am learning to!!  The kids opinion was that they like it for weeknights but would rather not do it on Saturday chore time.

However, Mark and I are seeing some amazing things happening because of it and will keep it up.   Here are the benefits we see:

1. Mason and Samantha, who sometimes have issues because they are the youngest and often feel powerless, get a chance to be in charge and boss everyone around.  They are good leaders though and do a good job at being fair.  I have been impressed.

2. The work is done faster on the weeknights.  The kids felt like it took longer on Saturday and it did for some of them but took less time as a whole for me.

3. They are learning how to be good leaders and good followers which is an important life skill.

4. They are learning how to communicate better about how to get the job done.  I heard Mason stop his team last night and say to them "How do you think it's going?  What can we do better?"  Rachel gave some constructive criticism and he took it without getting upset and adjusted how he was leading.  THAT IS HUGE!!!  NO fighting.  It was beautiful.

This does not mean they have never fought.  Sometimes one of them just has a bad attitude and makes it difficult but they are working through it and I see them working it out even when they have a difficult team member.

5. I dont' have to micromanage.  I don't have to round kids up and say "the job is not finished".  I don't have to just do it because it's easier then getting them to do it.

6. Mark is getting some big BIG husband points and Dad points on this one.  He has made my life easier in a HUGE way.

Turkey Lurkey and Starry Starry Night

Remember my art class?
It's 2 1/2 hrs once a month for 6 months, excluding December, thank goodness.  So as of yesterday, I have attended 3 and because I am a student at UVU, I have been able to attend for free.  If I was a full time teacher, I would have to pay for the classes (not sure how much) but I could earn credit towards necessary continuing education hours.

It's called Arts Engage and besides the visual Arts class by Scott Flox that I am taking, there is a dance class and a music class to bring the elements of music and movement into the classroom to build brains,  promote creative problems solving skills and have fun learning!

I am really enjoying my class.  I have never felt particularly artistic, so it's fun to come away each Saturday with something I never thought I could create and I hope I can find a way to incorporate these projects into the classroom setting.  The teacher tells us as he teaches how he incorporates art into his 3rd grade classroom every day to promote literacy.

He says when they start with a project, they are invested in it and are more wiling to write about it.  They want to tell you about their Starry starry night. It's easy to find similes and metaphors to tell you the wind is like a ribbon or the moon is like a wedge of melting cheese making a puddle of gold in the sky.  If they start a writing assignment knowing they're just going to have to write, and rewrite 6 times, not so exciting.  Hmmm.... makes sense!

This was yesterday's project, pastel chalks on black paper. The vocabulary for the day was "contour" and "movement".  This painting is all about movement.  Which direction is the wind moving?  What about the Horizon lines?  What about the lines of the bush?
As we filled in our lines and layers of color, we needed to follow the contour to create the feeling of movement.  It was amazing to see the different directions each person's creativity took them.  There was a moon at our table that was 3 times as large as mine.  It was pretty awesome.  Did you know you can erase the pastel chalk? You can.  I love mine but i can see a place to the right of the wind, above the horizon line where I was in a hurry and my blue sky does not follow the contour, it looks messy and so I have learned a lesson... It does make a difference! Follow the Contour!!!!

Here's my Turkey from the October class.  He is pretty funny.  I didn't bring my feathers in tight enough at the bottom and they are a little wide for his body.  He's not connected so I think I want to redo my feathers.  This lesson was about blending chalk and learning how the two colors would blend together to create the look you want.  This was not traced.  I made him.  I followed his directions step by step, as he created one on the board in the front of the room.
Again... so fun!
Can't believe I made him all by myself.

In each of the classes, I took notes as I went and have typed them all up so I hope I can recreate him for my future students.
Can you imagine the cute stories kids could come up with him? They would feel invested in the emotions they created on his face and in his stance... They would be thinking about what he is worried about and his escape plan as they create.

on being resourceful....

10/25  Ward Halloween party

Crazy week-
Class until 2.
A meeting after class for a group project.
Get home, help Mark make chili for cook-off.
Braid hair for Samantha and Gisselle and get them to curtain call for play performance by 6.
Lesson plan to finish up & turn in by 6pm.
Ward party at 6:30
No time for costume finishing for Mason-

He dug in the Halloween box and got out Carly's zombie costume from her 12th grade senior spirit day theme day minus the green socks and all the red blood... that had washed out.  He just had the shirt and the shorts. No time for embellishments.

You can call it desperate or resourceful-
Your call...
But
When we got to the church I had a idea to make him more zombi-ish--
we went into all the classrooms and wiped our hands in all the chalkboard trays and patted it all over his face.

Think what you will but HE thought I was brilliant-
 and that's all that matters.

Still Life

One of my classes this semester is Integrating Creative Arts into the curriculum.
My Final is not a test but a project-
We had about 5 different choices for the project and the one I chose was to attend an art class on Saturdays for teachers and preservice teachers.  It's a 3 hr class on the last Saturday of the month for 6 months.  After the first 3 classes, I'll no longer be in my Arts Class but she is hoping we will find it valuable enough to continue through March.
I also have to use the information I learn from the class to create and teach two lessons during my field work assignment in November.

I attended my first class on Saturday.
They are taught by a very experienced teacher named Scott Flox.
He was amazing to listen to and with very simple instructions he helped me to draw this still life all by myself.

It may not seem like much to you but I am AMAZED.
I have never considered myself artistic, especially drawing-
but you can actually tell what I was drawing!

He does amazing stuff with his elementary education students and has found the drawing helps their brains prepare for reading and writing and his test scores are really high.
He has been teaching since the 70's and kind of discovered accidentally when his kids wanted to draw the millennial Falcon during the Star Wars craze that the same skills required to focus and follow directions to create the drawings helped them make incredible strides in reading.

I'm going to try to see if I can use the same instruction he gave me to get my kids to draw the still life for FHE...
It will be good practice.

School is Fun!!!

"Don't Mock My Faith!"

We were invited to go down to Southern Utah the Last week of August to go boating with Mark's boss.
Mark got a paid day off which was Awesome
Plus...
My parents, 2 of my brothers
AND
Carly and Adam live down that way
so we were so excited.

We drove down Thursday night, picked up Carly and Adam at SUU and drove on to my parents house.  We woke up Friday morning to pancakes on the griddle....
Grandma C's signature breakfast for guests-
and looked out the window to find
Black clouds and pouring rain.

Mark called up his boss and said "I guess boating is off" and Lonnie said "Oh heck no... this is just a little storm cell. Let's go!"

I had some serious doubts as the Thunder rumbled over head but we climbed into the van and drove over to Lonnie's house where he was hooking up the boat.  Jake and Mason decided to drive over with him and I just shook my head and we all just looked at each other like we didn't know WHY we were driving to the lake....

We pulled up to the dock.  Mark jumped out to help Lonnie get the boat in the water.  Carly, Adam, Rachel, Samantha and I sat in the van watching the rain pour and it was COLD outside.

As we sat there, Samantha said "I think it's stopping. Yeah.  I think it's going to be fine!"
We looked at her like she was crazy.  Somebody laughed.  Somebody said "look out the window... I don't think so" and she replied with determination in her voice
"Don't mock my faith!"
Just about that time, Mark motioned for us to come down to the boat.
I was dreading going out.  The rain had slowed, due no doubt to Samantha's belief, but it was still falling and it was chilly sitting there in our swimsuits.

We put the canopy up on the boat and putted around the lake a bit and Lonnie grinned at us and said "You just watch. This is the best kind of day.  We've got the lake to ourselves! It's gonna clear up!" He got out the tube and a few jumped in and the rain slowed even more til it was just sprinkling.
They skies were very gray and overcast.  I wish I had taken my camera out but I had left it in the car because of the rain.  I didn't think there would be anything to take pictures of.  I finally got it later when we docked for lunch.

Anyway...
Rachel, Adam, Carly and Jake decided to try out the tube first and when they jumped in the lake they said the water was SO warm.  And it was.  It felt like bath water.  It was so nice.
The Day just got better and better from then on.  It wasn't immediate.  The rain just slowed and slowed until it finally stopped.  The skies just cleared and cleared little by little until the sun shone down on us but the water was clear and beautiful and warm.

There were red vines and Nutter butters and Oreos!

Lonnie's wife drove over and met us at the dock with lunch from Firehouse subs!
Yum.

The newlyweds were just as happily in love as you might imagine...

There were some tunes

And there was the Tube!

Getting on the tube

was sometimes harder than you might think....

And staying on the tube...

Was

Even

Harder!

Especially

for the poor sap who gets stuck

kneeling in the back position

which was usually Jake!
He was such a good sport about taking that spot.  You can't see it very well in these pictures but there are 3 spots to sit in the front and then a spot behind the center seat for a 4th person who kneels there and holds on.

Nobody wanted that spot and Jake would always take it.  His poor arms were like spaghetti noodles at the end of the day from holding on so tight.

we also got to try kneeboarding

Sammy did it!

Mason dit it!

Mark tried to do it

and got up on his knees...

which was farther than I got.  I tried and couldn't even get up to my knees.....
embarrassing....

Jake did it!

Carly did it!

She was a total natural at it.

Rachel did it!

Jake tried really hard to wakeboard but never could quite get up.  We think it was because we did it at the end and he was so worn out from the riding on the back of the tube and kneeboarding.  He just couldn't keep his balance.

Lonnie was right!
It was a great day on the lake.
We had it to ourselves until the late afternoon when 2 or 3 other boats joined us.  We stopped a lot and jumped in the warm water and swam in our life jackets and that was a lot of fun too. We had a great time being together and seeing Carly and Adam.  We finally left the lake about 5 o'clock and went to my parent's house to get cleaned up a little and then Lonnie had dinner for us at his house a block away.

He is a generous boss and really made the day a great one for our family.
I appreciated the opportunity to be in a beautiful place with the people I love best.
It's one of those days you'll never forget and we had to go through cloudy skies and cold rain to get it.  If it had been up to most of us I think we would have thrown in the towel-
Our perfect day was created
because of Lonnie's optimism that put us on the road-
and Samantha's belief that something better was coming.

hmmmm.....I think there's a life lesson in there somewhere......

The Big Cheese turns 45!

The Big Cheese turned 45 in August...

We made this yummy cake our neice Ava had made at a family BBQ that is so Easy and so good
1 Angel food cake mix
1 Can crushed pineapple WITH the juice
Mix and bake and pour in 13x9 pan
Bake @350ª
not sure how long.... think we started with 15-20 min and just kept checking til it was done
After it's cool-
Cover with cool whip
(She used Cool Whip pourable frosting but we didnt' have any. Both are yum!)
And top with any fruit that sounds yummy.
We used strawberries.
We stuck a star candle because 45 candles just take WAY too long to light and when I tried 40 candles a few years ago, it actually set off my smoke alarm... and sang him the Happy Birthday song
but....
he was looking at it like Why would you make this for my birthday....
It's not HIS favorite
He got a big smile on his face when
I came in with a single slice of bday cake I bought at
Their Madagascar vanilla White cake is "to die for" and he LOVES store bought white cake.

He is always so fun to watch open presents.
He makes the kids grin as he makes a big deal out of opening their presents.

All the kids LOVED the fruity angel food cake.

They were sad when it was all gone-

and said next time, I should make 2!
